Here's what we find, why it matters, and how a proper inspection surfaces it before it becomes a claim or a fire.
Knob-and-Tube Wiring
Knob-and-tube is the oldest wiring system you'll still find live in Toronto homes, common in houses built before the 1950s. It runs single conductors through ceramic tubes and supports them on ceramic knobs. In its original, undisturbed condition it can still be functional — but that's rarely how we find it. Decades of renovations mean it's often been spliced into, tapped, buried under blown-in attic insulation (which traps heat around conductors never designed to be enclosed), or extended with modern cable in ways that undermine it.
The two structural problems with knob-and-tube are that it's ungrounded and that its insulation gets brittle with age. It also wasn't designed for the loads a modern household throws at it. Beyond the safety questions, many insurers won't write or renew a policy on a home with active knob-and-tube. Aluminum Branch-Circuit Wiring
If your Toronto home was built or substantially rewired roughly between 1965 and 1975, there's a good chance the branch circuits are aluminum rather than copper. Aluminum was cheaper during a copper price spike, and it works fine as a conductor — the problem is at the connections. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper as it heats and cools with load. Over years of cycling, terminations at outlets, switches, and splices can loosen. A loose connection means resistance, resistance means heat, and heat at a device or in a box is exactly where fires start.
Aluminum wiring doesn't mean you need a full rewire. There are recognized correction methods — proper connectors and terminations rated for aluminum, installed by a licensed electrician — that make it safe. What you shouldn't do is ignore it or let a handyman "just replace the outlets" with standard copper-rated devices. Cloth-Covered Wiring
Between the knob-and-tube era and modern plastic-jacketed cable, a lot of Toronto homes were wired with early cable that used cloth or rubberized insulation over the conductors. It isn't automatically dangerous, but the insulation degrades with age and heat. We see it crack and crumble most where it's warmest — inside the panel, at light fixtures, and packed into junction boxes. Once the insulation is failing, the bare conductors are one nudge away from a short or an arc. It's also usually ungrounded. We assess the actual condition of the insulation rather than condemning it on sight, and recommend targeted repair or rewiring based on what we find.
Open Splices and Uncovered Junction Boxes
This is the single most common thing we find in older homes, and it's almost always the fingerprint of unpermitted work. Every wire connection is supposed to be made inside an approved, accessible, covered junction box. What we actually find in attics, basements, and behind ceiling tiles are wires twisted together with tape, connections floating in mid-air, splices buried inside walls where you can never inspect them, and open boxes with no cover plate. Every one of these is a potential arc point with no enclosure to contain it. They're cheap to fix once found — the danger is that they're hidden, which is exactly why they matter in an inspection.
Undersized 60-Amp Services and Fuse Panels
A lot of older Toronto homes still run on a 60-amp service, often paired with a fuse panel. Sixty amps was plenty when the house heated with gas or oil and ran a fridge, a few lights, and a radio. It's tight for a modern home with central air conditioning, an over-the-range microwave, a dishwasher, and it's a non-starter if you're adding an EV charger. Fuse panels aren't inherently unsafe, but they invite over-fusing — someone drops a 30-amp fuse into a 15-amp circuit to stop the "annoying" blowing, and now the wire can overheat without ever tripping.

Ungrounded Two-Prong Outlets
Older homes were wired without a ground conductor, so you'll find two-prong receptacles throughout. This wasn't a violation when the house was built — it just reflects an older code. The catch is that an ungrounded circuit gives fault current nowhere safe to go, and it provides no ground path for surge protectors and sensitive electronics, so that power bar "protecting" your TV may not be doing much. DIY and Handyman Alterations
In Ontario, a homeowner is generally permitted to do electrical work in a home they own and occupy — but it still requires an ESA notification (permit) and an inspection, and it's not something we recommend for anyone without training. The bigger issue we run into is work done by a "handyman" who isn't a Licensed Electrical Contractor at all. Hired electrical work has to be done by a licensed contractor, full stop. The layered result of decades of these shortcuts is what makes older homes unpredictable: backstabbed connections, undersized wire feeding new circuits, missing grounds, and additions piled onto original circuits until they're chronically overloaded.
Overloaded Circuits
Overloaded circuits are usually the symptom, not the disease. When a home has only a handful of original circuits and forty years of added outlets hanging off them, every one gets pushed past what its wire was meant to carry. The signs are familiar: breakers that trip when you run the microwave and the kettle together, warm outlet plates, lights that dim when the furnace kicks on, and that faint hot-plastic smell near a device.
