Looking for an Electrician in Vaughan?

Portman Electric is a Toronto-based electrical contractor serving Vaughan and the surrounding GTA. We work in Woodbridge, Maple, Concord, Kleinburg, Vellore Village, Patterson, Carrville, around the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and in the parts of Thornhill that fall within Vaughan.

The work splits two ways. On the residential side: detached homes, townhouses and condos needing panel and service upgrades, EV circuits, basement and renovation wiring, and fault finding. On the commercial side: plazas, restaurants, offices, retail units, warehouses and commercial/industrial units, and property-managed buildings needing service calls, lighting repair, tenant improvements and maintenance.

We provide electrical service throughout Vaughan. Portman Electric does not maintain an office or storefront in Vaughan — we travel to the job.

Vaughan Properties

What Vaughan Buildings Ask of the Electrical

Vaughan mixes newer subdivisions, older Woodbridge streets and a large commercial base in Concord and along the highway corridors. Each brings different electrical problems.

Newer subdivisions

Many Maple, Vellore and Patterson homes have 100A or 200A services sized for the original house — not for a finished basement, a suite and two EVs added later.

Older Woodbridge housing

Earlier-era homes carry original branch wiring and panels that have been added to over decades of renovation.

Finished basements & suites

Second units add kitchen, laundry, heating and alarm circuits. The service has to carry all of it.

Garages & EV charging

Attached two-car garages are common, so the charger location is usually straightforward — capacity is the real question.

Hot tubs & pool equipment

Large lots mean spas and pool equipment on dedicated, GFCI-protected circuits, often with outdoor runs.

Plazas & retail

Strip plazas across Woodbridge and Maple mean tenant turnovers, signage, lighting failures and rooftop equipment calls.

Concord commercial units

Warehouse and commercial/industrial condo units, often on a 600V supply with 347V lighting, three-phase equipment and transformers.

VMC development

New mid- and high-rise buildings bring suite work, retail fit-outs and property-managed common areas.

Homes

Residential Electrician in Vaughan

Residential electrical work across Vaughan, from a single dead circuit to a full service upgrade. See all residential electrical services for detail on each.

Longer buried runs to detached garages or outbuildings, common on Kleinburg lots, are covered under trenching and underground conduit. More on residential electrical services.

Capacity

Panel & 200 Amp Service Upgrades in Vaughan

A panel replacement and a service upgrade are different jobs. Replacing the panel fixes obsolete, damaged or full distribution equipment; it does not add capacity. A 200 amp service upgrade increases what comes into the house and can involve the meter base, service conductors, grounding and bonding, utility disconnect and reconnect, and ESA inspection.

In Vaughan, the trigger is usually added load: a basement suite, a heated garage, a hot tub or a second EV. We run a load calculation on the existing service first. If 100A carries the planned loads, we say so. Read 100A vs 200A explained before you decide.

EV Charging

EV Charger Installation in Vaughan

We install Tesla Wall Connectors and other Level 2 chargers on a dedicated circuit, sized from a load calculation, not guesswork. Attached garages are typical in Maple, Vellore and Patterson, so the run is often short. The open question is whether the existing service has room once air conditioning, ranges and dryers are counted.

Options include a lower charger output setting, approved load management that sheds the charger under peak demand, or a service upgrade where it is genuinely needed. For detached garages and outbuildings on larger Kleinburg lots, the scope includes trenching and underground conduit. Details on EV charger installation.

Service Calls

Electrical Service Calls & Troubleshooting in Vaughan

A dead kitchen circuit, a GFCI that won't reset, lights that dim when the furnace starts, or half the house without power: each has several possible causes. We test circuits, connections and the panel to find the actual fault before replacing anything. A loose neutral and a failed breaker can look the same from the hallway.

Service calls cover homes, plaza units and managed buildings. Describe what stopped working and what still works when you call. See electrical troubleshooting and commercial troubleshooting. For standby power during outages, we also install generators and transfer switches.

Examples

Electrical Problems We Can Help With

Illustrative examples of typical requests, not quotes from specific customers.

Example

I want a Level 2 charger in my Maple garage, but I have a finished basement and central air.

A load calculation against the existing service comes first. Depending on the numbers, the answer may be a dedicated circuit, a lower-output setting, approved load management, or a service upgrade — not automatically 200A.

EV charger installation

Example

We're finishing the basement in Vellore and adding a suite.

Plan kitchen, laundry, heating, lighting and interconnected smoke/CO alarm circuits while walls are open, and confirm the panel and service carry the finished house.

Renovation electrical

Example

Half the lights in our Woodbridge plaza unit are out.

Commercial lighting failures can be lamps, drivers, ballasts, controls or a circuit fault — often 347V. We test to find which before replacing fixtures.

Commercial lighting

Example

We're moving equipment into a Concord unit and need three-phase power.

We review the existing distribution, voltage and available capacity, then scope feeders, transformers or panel changes needed for the equipment nameplates.

Concord

Commercial Electrician in Concord

Concord is mostly industrial and commercial units, warehouses and service businesses. Many buildings take a 600V supply, with 347V lighting and transformers stepping down to 120/208V for receptacles and smaller equipment. New tenants often bring machinery that needs three-phase power, a new disconnect, or a transformer sized to the nameplates.

Send equipment specs and photos of the electrical room. We review capacity, voltage and routing before quoting. See 600V electrical work.

Fit-Outs

Tenant Fit-Out & Commercial Renovation Electrical

Retail, restaurant and office units across Vaughan turn over regularly. A fit-out usually means removing the previous tenant's circuits, new lighting layouts, receptacles and data rough-in, kitchen or equipment circuits, exit and emergency lighting, and panel changes to suit the new use. We work from landlord criteria, architectural and electrical drawings, and the GC's schedule.

General contractors can send drawings for pricing using the form below. More on tenant fit-out electrical and working with us as an electrical subcontractor.

Lighting

Commercial Lighting Service in Vaughan

Lighting failures are among the most common commercial calls: dark parking lots, corridors on a dead circuit, flickering troffers, failed drivers and ballasts, photocells and timers out of sync. Many commercial fixtures run at 347V, so the repair needs a contractor equipped for that voltage. We test the lamp, driver, control and circuit before replacing fixtures.

LED retrofits reduce maintenance calls. For warehouse and high-ceiling areas, send heights and access notes; lift needs are reviewed during scoping. See commercial lighting service.

Property Managers

Property Management Electrician in Vaughan

For property managers, condo managers, building owners, landlords and facility managers. Plazas, commercial condos and residential buildings need a contractor who answers work orders, coordinates access and documents the job.

Service Area

Established streets near the Humber alongside newer infill and large detached homes; renovation and panel work, plus plaza and retail service.

Maple

Subdivision homes from the 1990s onward — finished basements, garage EV circuits and service capacity reviews.

Concord

Commercial and industrial units, warehouses and plazas: service calls, 347V lighting on 600V supplies, three-phase equipment and tenant work.

Kleinburg

Larger detached properties, detached outbuildings and long feeder runs; exterior lighting and capacity planning.

Thornhill (Vaughan portion)

The Vaughan side of Thornhill, west of Yonge — older split-levels and renovated detached homes.

Patterson

Newer townhouses and detached homes — EV chargers, basement finishing and added circuits.

Carrville

Newer residential streets where owners are adding chargers, suites and lighting.

Vellore Village

Subdivision housing with finished basements, secondary suites and garage charging.

Vaughan Metropolitan Centre

Condo units, offices and ground-floor retail — suite repairs, lighting and tenant improvements.

Woodbridge

Electrician in Woodbridge

Woodbridge has some of Vaughan's oldest housing near the village core and the Humber, alongside large custom homes and newer infill. Older houses may still have original branch wiring, small services and panels modified through several renovations. Before a kitchen or basement project, it is worth checking what the existing distribution can carry. An electrical safety inspection documents the existing condition for insurers or buyers.

Woodbridge plazas and retail strips need lighting repair, tenant turnover work and commercial service calls.

Maple

Electrician in Maple, Vaughan

Most Maple homes were built from the 1990s onward, so the wiring is newer but the services were sized for the original house. Common requests: finishing a basement, adding a legal secondary suite, a Level 2 charger in the garage, pot lights, and dedicated circuits for a gym or workshop. Each adds load, and three of them together can push a 100A service past its calculated limit.

We plan those additions together. See renovation electrical and pot light installation.

Kleinburg & Vellore

Electrical Service in Kleinburg & Vellore Village

Kleinburg properties tend to be larger, with detached garages, pool houses, landscape lighting and long distances between the panel and the load. That makes voltage drop, feeder sizing and buried conduit part of the conversation. Hot tubs and pool equipment need dedicated supply and GFCI protection. See pool and spa electrical.

Vellore Village is mostly newer subdivision housing, so the work is basements, suites, charging and lighting, with capacity checked before anything is added. Both areas are within our travel service area; we do not have an office in either.
