Charging Levels Explained
Level 1 vs Level 2 vs DC Fast
Level 1
120V · 12–15A
Standard household outlet. About 8–12 km of range per hour. May be adequate for plug-in hybrids with small batteries or commuters under 40 km/day — but not practical for full EVs.
Level 2
240V · 16–80A
The right home charging solution. A full charge every night for virtually every EV. What every Toronto homeowner with an EV should have.
DC Fast
480V DC · 100–500A
Not installed in homes. Requires utility-scale infrastructure. Use public fast chargers for road-trip top-ups.
The 80% Continuous Load Rule — Ontario Electrical Safety Code
EV charging is a continuous load. The Code limits continuous loads to 80% of a circuit's rated capacity. 50A breaker → 40A max charge rate. 60A breaker → 48A max. 100A breaker → 80A max. This is why circuit breakers must be sized 25% larger than the charger's peak draw — and why "setting a 14-50 outlet to 48A" is a code violation and fire risk.

There's no universal winner. A vehicle with a 32A on-board charger fills up just as fast from a 14-50 outlet as it would hardwired — while an F-150 Lightning only reaches full speed hardwired on an 80A circuit.
