Types of Transfer Switches

• Manual transfer switch — a dedicated panel with selected circuits that can be switched between utility and generator power. Required by the Canadian Electrical Code for portable generator connections. Gives you control over exactly which loads run on generator.
• Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) — detects a power outage and starts the standby generator automatically, without any action from the homeowner. Required for whole-home standby generators.

Standby vs. Portable Generators

Standby generators run on natural gas or propane, start automatically, and can power the whole home. They sit on a concrete pad beside the house and connect permanently to both the gas line and the electrical panel via an ATS. Portable generators run on gasoline, require manual setup, and need a proper manual transfer switch and inlet box to connect safely to the home. We do the electrical side of both — for gas connections on standby units, we coordinate with a licensed gas contractor.

ESA Permit Requirement

Any generator connection to your home's electrical system requires an ESA permit in Ontario. This applies to manual transfer switches and ATS installations. We pull the permit and coordinate the inspection — this protects you, your insurance coverage, and anyone working on the utility lines.

How the Work Is Done
