What Every Toronto Homeowner Should Know

Most homeowners don't think about their outlets until something goes wrong — a tripped breaker, a burning smell, or a plug that won't stay in. The truth is that outlets and switches are some of the most important safety components in your home, and the Ontario Electrical Safety Code has very specific requirements for how they should be installed and protected. Here's what you need to know, written from the perspective of an electrician who sees these issues on the job every week.

Outlets and switches may seem simple, but they are important safety parts of your home's electrical system. Loose outlets, warm receptacles, missing GFCI protection, ungrounded two-prong outlets, overloaded power bars, and outdated devices can all create safety risks. If an outlet is loose, hot, sparking, discoloured, or smells like burning plastic, stop using it and call a licensed electrician.

Dedicated Circuits: Which Appliances Need Their Own Circuit

A dedicated circuit serves one appliance and nothing else. It has its own breaker in the panel and its own wire run to a single outlet. This matters because large appliances draw significant sustained current — and sharing that load with other devices on the same circuit causes nuisance tripping, overheating, and in worst cases, fires.

The following appliances require or strongly benefit from their own dedicated circuit:

Refrigerator

The fridge is one of the most underestimated electrical loads in the home. The compressor motor draws a surge of current every time it cycles on. On a shared circuit with other loads, this cycling can cause lights to flicker and creates stress on the circuit. In newer kitchen layouts, refrigerators are commonly placed on their own 15A or 20A circuit to reduce nuisance tripping and avoid sharing with high-draw countertop loads.

Dishwasher

Dishwashers draw 10–15 amps continuously during the heating cycle. They are best served by a dedicated 15A or 20A circuit. Many older Toronto kitchens have the dishwasher tapped onto the garbage disposal circuit or a general kitchen circuit — this causes nuisance tripping and puts unnecessary stress on shared wiring.

Microwave

A built-in or over-the-range microwave should be on a dedicated 20A circuit. Countertop microwaves should also be on a dedicated circuit or at minimum an appliance circuit shared only with other small countertop appliances — not on the same circuit as the fridge, dishwasher, or garbage disposal.

Kitchen Counter Outlets (Small Appliance Circuits)

This is where most kitchens fall short. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires a minimum of two dedicated 20-amp small appliance circuits for counter outlets in the kitchen. These circuits serve the toaster, kettle, coffee maker, air fryer, and similar countertop appliances. In a modern kitchen with multiple high-draw countertop appliances, three or four 20A circuits is the practical recommendation — especially with today's air fryers, instant pots, and espresso machines all running at once.

AFCI Protection: The Outlet Standard You Haven't Heard Of

AFCI stands for Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter. Unlike a standard breaker that trips on overload or short circuit, an AFCI detects the signature electrical "arc" that occurs when wires are damaged, connections are loose, or a cord is pinched — the kind of fault that causes electrical fires without tripping a normal breaker.

Modern residential electrical work often requires AFCI protection in key living areas, including bedrooms. Requirements can depend on the age of the home, the type of work being performed, and current Ontario Electrical Safety Code rules. In practice, AFCI protection is a worthwhile addition in any older Toronto home where wiring may be aging, connections have worked loose over decades, or knob-and-tube wiring has been extended or modified.

A note from the field: We find arc faults most commonly behind outlets where a staple was driven through the wire during original construction, in walls where renovations were done without pulling permits, and in homes with aluminum wiring that has developed loose connections at outlets and switches. AFCI breakers catch these before they become fires.

GFCI Protection: Where It's Required and Why It Saves Lives

GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. It monitors the current flowing out and back on a circuit and trips in milliseconds if it detects even a small imbalance — which happens when current is finding a path through a person. A standard breaker won't trip fast enough to prevent electrocution. A GFCI will.

GFCI protection is required by the Ontario Electrical Safety Code in the following locations:

  • Bathrooms — all outlets within the bathroom, regardless of distance from the sink.
  • Kitchen countertops — all outlets within 1.5 metres of a sink.
  • Garages — all outlets in attached and detached garages.
  • Outdoors — all exterior outlets, including front porch, back deck, and soffit receptacles.
  • Basements — unfinished basements require GFCI protection on all outlets.
  • Near pools, hot tubs, and water features — any outlet within the applicable zone.
  • Crawl spaces and utility rooms — anywhere with potential moisture exposure.

Test Your GFCI Outlets Once a Month

Every GFCI outlet has a TEST and RESET button. Press TEST — the outlet should go dead immediately. Press RESET — power should return. If the outlet doesn't trip on TEST, or won't reset, the GFCI has failed and must be replaced. This takes 10 seconds and should be done monthly. A GFCI that doesn't trip offers no protection.

Tamper-Resistant Outlets: Required, Not Optional

Tamper-resistant (TR) outlets look like standard outlets but have a set of internal spring-loaded shutters behind the slots. The shutters only open when equal pressure is applied to both slots simultaneously — meaning a child can't insert a key, fork, or hairpin into a single slot.

TR outlets are required in all new residential construction and renovations under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. If your home was built or renovated recently, you likely already have them — look for the "TR" marking embossed between the slots. If your home has standard outlets and you have young children, replacing them with tamper-resistant versions is a straightforward upgrade that any licensed electrician can complete in an afternoon.

They cost marginally more than standard outlets and provide meaningful protection. There's no reason not to have them.

Ungrounded Outlets: A Problem That Needs Fixing

Two-prong outlets — common in Toronto homes built before the 1960s — are ungrounded. A grounded circuit has three wires: hot, neutral, and ground. The ground wire provides a safe path for fault current to return to the panel and trip the breaker if something goes wrong. Without it, fault current can travel through the appliance casing, through you, and to the floor.

You cannot simply replace a two-prong outlet with a three-prong outlet and call it fixed. Without a ground wire in the box, the third prong on the outlet is not connected to anything — it offers a false sense of safety while providing none.

The correct options are:

  • Run a new ground wire — the proper fix, requires opening walls in many cases.
  • Install a GFCI outlet — permitted by the OESC as a replacement for ungrounded outlets. Must be labelled "No Equipment Ground." Provides shock protection but does not provide a true equipment ground for sensitive electronics.
  • Install a GFCI breaker — protects all outlets on that circuit at the panel level.

Using a three-prong adapter ("cheater plug") on an ungrounded two-prong outlet is not an acceptable fix under any circumstances.

Loose Outlets Are a Fire Risk — Don't Ignore Them

A loose outlet — one that wobbles, spins, or where the plug falls out on its own — is not just an annoyance. It is a fire hazard. When a plug doesn't make solid contact with the outlet contacts, the connection arcs. Arcing generates heat. Sustained arcing inside a wall cavity, especially near insulation or wood framing, can start a fire that burns for hours before becoming visible.

Loose outlets are common in older Toronto homes where the outlets have simply worn out after decades of use. Outlet contacts fatigue. The fix is a replacement outlet — a $5–$10 part and 20 minutes of labour. Do not defer this repair.

If you notice an outlet that feels warm to the touch, smells like burning plastic, or shows discolouration around the faceplate, call an electrician immediately. These are signs of active arcing or overheating that require urgent attention.

Power Bars: What They're For and What They're Not For

Power bars (power strips) are designed for low-draw electronics — computers, monitors, phone chargers, lamps. They are not designed for high-draw appliances.

Do not plug the following into a power bar:

  • Air conditioners — window and portable AC units draw 6–15 amps continuously. They must be plugged directly into a wall outlet.
  • Space heaters — one of the most common causes of house fires. Always plug directly into a wall outlet, never a power bar or extension cord.
  • Microwaves — high surge current on startup, sustained draw during operation.
  • Toasters and toaster ovens — heating elements draw close to full circuit capacity.
  • Electric kettles — 1500–1800 watts is near the limit of a 15A circuit on its own.
  • Refrigerators and freezers — sustained load plus compressor surge.

The issue isn't just the power bar's rating — it's the wire gauge and connections inside. Power bars are not built for sustained high-amperage loads. They overheat. Use them for what they're designed for: low-draw electronics on a desk or entertainment unit.

Outdoor Receptacles: GFCI and Weatherproof Boxes Required

Every outdoor outlet in Ontario must be GFCI protected. This applies to front porch outlets, back deck outlets, soffit outlets, garage exterior outlets, and any receptacle exposed to the elements. There are no exceptions.

In addition to GFCI protection, outdoor outlets must be installed in a weatherproof (WP) rated box with an in-use cover — a cover that closes around the plug while it's in use, not just when the outlet is empty. Standard "flip-up" covers that leave the plug exposed to rain are not compliant for permanent outdoor outlets.

We regularly find outdoor outlets on Toronto homes that were added by previous owners without proper weatherproofing. Water intrusion into an outlet box causes corrosion, shorts, and GFCI tripping. If your outdoor outlet trips frequently or shows signs of moisture inside the cover, it needs to be replaced with a proper weatherproof installation.

Common Questions

Do kitchen outlets need to be on dedicated circuits in Ontario?

Yes. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires at least two dedicated 20-amp small appliance circuits for kitchen counter outlets. Fridges and dishwashers each benefit from their own dedicated circuit to reduce tripping and protect other loads. Microwaves should also be on a dedicated circuit.

What is a tamper-resistant outlet and do I need one?
