Anyone recommending a whole-house rewire before tracing the existing system is quoting a scope rather than answering a question.

With walls, ceilings or floors already open, older wiring can be replaced and new branch circuits added without the cutting and patching the same work requires once surfaces are closed. Legacy circuits exposed during demolition can be dealt with while access is easy, lighting and kitchen circuits can be laid out for the finished plan, and capacity for later additions such as EV charging can be roughed in rather than retrofitted.

Can you troubleshoot partial power loss?

Yes. Losing power to part of a property while the rest stays on is a common call and a diagnosable one. The approach is testing rather than guessing: establishing which circuits are affected, what they share, and where the interruption actually sits. Depending on what the testing shows, the cause may be a device, a connection, a breaker, a shared neutral or something upstream at the panel or service. The point of the diagnosis is to find the actual fault rather than replace the most visible component.

Can a dead receptacle actually be caused by a panel problem?

Yes, and Portman has a documented case of exactly that. On a Riverdale service call for a non-working GFCI, tracing the circuit at the panel revealed a burnt bus bar and a damaged breaker connection. The visible symptom was a single dead receptacle; the real problem was inside the panel. A dead receptacle can be caused by the device itself, another device upstream, the wiring, a breaker or a connection elsewhere in the circuit, which is why the circuit gets traced rather than the part swapped.

Do you work on duplexes and triplexes?

How a particular building should be arranged electrically depends on its existing service, distribution, metering and calculated load, so the existing setup is assessed rather than assumed.

Can you provide electrical work for a detached garage?

Yes. Detached garage electrical is common in the east end, where rear-lane garages and backyard structures are part of the housing stock. That work can include the supply from the house, garage lighting and receptacles, EV charger circuits, and exterior and backyard electrical. Where the supply has to run underground, trenching and underground conduit are part of the scope. The route and the available capacity are both assessed before the work is quoted.

Can you install pot lights in an older plaster ceiling?

Often, but it depends on the ceiling and what is above it. Original plaster and lath behaves differently from drywall — it is harder to fish and it patches differently. An accessible attic above makes a ceiling a much easier candidate than a finished floor or a joist space full of ductwork. The existing lighting circuit also matters, since older circuits may be ungrounded or shared in ways that need attention first. Where a ceiling is a poor candidate, we say so rather than leave you with patched holes and a bad result.

Can an insurance company ask about knob-and-tube wiring?

Yes, and insurers commonly do. Requirements differ between companies, and there is no single industry rule — some insurers ask about active knob-and-tube, fuse equipment, older service sizes, aluminum branch wiring or panel condition, and they weigh those answers differently.
